WAYS OF DOING THINGS:
(1.) Глагол to invent в значении "изобретать, издавать" используется в разных сферах человеческой деятельности, но преимущественно для новых, ранее неизведанных предметов материальной культуры. В отличие от него глаголы to create, to devise, to conceive, to make up, to make up with, to think up конкретизируют и ограничивают сферу использования и все относятся к продуктам умственной деятельности, литературы, разных областей искусств, к области фантазии. Кроме такого ограничения они различаются по стилю речи: to invent - глагол нейтральный, to make up, to make up with и to think up, to create, to devise, to conceive носят более литературный, книжный характер.
